Prelude to JUSTICE & its inception

Mwafrika called me up early in 2006 and asked me to come over to a studio in Kilimani.Having nothing better to do at that time i obliged and headed to studio. We used to build alot then.

Talking about politics, hiphop, women, music and many other stuff backpackers indulge in when they converge.Really,i am a backpacker since thats the gatekeeping term that true hiphop heads have been bundled in.The sessions in Kilimani were inspiring, chilling, wilding out, breaking bread on concepts and even getting into fights.I remember one fight we had,we argued bitterly over the fact that Dj Premier compromised his dignity as a long and outstanding Hiphop Dj when he produced several tracks for Christina Aguillera...That was hard but the solution has never been gotten till now..Those are the kind of topics that kept us going, jobless thinking of how we could make it with our talents without compromising ourselves It was hard because we were from the same school of thought but differences in Hiphop often emerged to settle scores within us the ICU (Infinite Cypher Unknown-Da Zaq,Mwafrika,Muki Garang).Mwafrika didn't really appeal to the name of the clique but he kept silent about it.If you ask me why,I think its because all had a very strong affinity towards Indie Hiphop.I met Mwafrika through Paul Nunda then known as Paulo in 2002.We used to exchange underground hiphop on mp3 formats on disks. Then, there were websites you could download music from like www.audiogalaxy.com.We spent all our money in the cybercafes going hungry for days just to get music,Underground hiphop music.Hang out in www.okayplayer.com or even www.undergroundhiphop.com . Alot of that music found its way into radio stations in Narobi.During the weekends we converged in Eastleigh in California and indulged various peer influences while comparing notes on what we learnt of the Hiphop world.Thereafter meeting Mwafrika we got to meet the other members of the ICU crew.Who truly are members by support but not actively engaged in form of the culture thats Jason Mule and Richard Kitoshi(Yes they are so old school right now they lost their aliases).

Writing wasn't so hard then. The hunger was rife.On this day Mwafrika looked extremely troubled and i asked him whats up..he told me he wasn't happy with how things were going down..Dont ask me where...So we schemed through our library and got a beat and wrote justice recorded edited and boom there it was..

A few months later we met Dr.Alfred Mutua the Kenyan Government spokesman. He told us he likes the song and that he wanted to do a video for us.Well initially i thought it would be tricky for him because of the lyrics that we had written.Alfred told us not to worry he even told us Wako wouldn't have a problem since he was adversely mentioned.I remember Dr. Mutua commenting on the shirt i wore on the video shoot day.I wore a shirt with Githongo's face on it and a tag line 'Shujaa'..Alfred said as he was configuring the white balance on the camera 'Githongo, shujaa eh ?' I just smiled not knowing how to respond.I knew wearing the tee shirt spoke for itself. We worked well and completed the video justice.

The real work began when one day Mwafrika and I decided to go and try get airplay from a TV station. We did not receive a rude shock but we got what we expected. They asked us if we could censor some images and lyrics in the video.Mwafrika engaged the producer of the program in a heated debate concerning a clause in the constitution regarding 'freedom of speech' but it got us nowhere.I advised homeboy that we ought ta do what they want to get our video played. So then we went and censored the video and brought it back and it was on television on a channel that airs countrywide.Peep the video 'Justice' by produced by Dr.Alfred Mutua.
